1840s Eclipse watch party at Fort Towson Historic Site

FORT TOWSON, Okla. — The Fort Towson Historic Site will host an eclipse watch party with a period encampment on Monday, April 8, from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The event costs $10 per person at the gate, with no charge for military personnel, Oklahoma Historical Society members or children under six. The site will only accept cash at the gate. NASA estimates the Fort Towson Historic Site and areas of southeastern Oklahoma will see the partial eclipse between 12:28 p.m. and 3:06 p.m., with three minutes and 47 seconds of totality between 1:45 and 1:50 p.m. on April 8.

Altus Public Schools Pre-K, new Kindergarten enrollment scheduled

Altus Public Schools is rounding up all of our youngest Bulldogs who are ready for Pre-K and new-to-school Kindergarten students on Monday, March 25 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Altus Early Childhood and Rivers Elementary Pre-K and Kindergarten Round-Up will give parents an opportunity to complete the enrollment process and visit the school.

Altus Police searching for burglary suspects

Altus Police need your help after multiple reports of burglaries and thefts reported in the Industrial Park area of Southeast Altus. Monday morning, The City of Altus Electric Department employees discovered suspects had stolen a variety of tools from 4 separate work vehicles. Preliminary estimates of the property taken is approximately $50,000 dollars.

George Washington surprises officers with visit

In an effort to quell the growing unrest towards Congress, General George Washington made a surprise visit to officers at Newburgh, New York, on March 15, 1783, during an assembly of army officers. Officers were reportedly angry with Congress for failing to honor its promise to pay them and for its failure to settle accounts for repayment of food and clothing.
