You don’t have to go to Lawton or Wichita Falls to find big savings at malls and superstores on Black Friday, the unofficial focus on Christmas deals.
Local merchants have put together special savings on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Turn to page 11 to see local ads that mark Black Friday. Most of the stores are downtown including The Booterie, The Enchanted Door, Just Brew It, Lady Austin’s and Crown Jewelry. But others, including Gator’s Western Wear, H&H Furniture, GEMS ETCETERA and RAC are a short drive while another, Buds N More, is in Frederick.
Black Friday first got it’s name from police officers who responded to numerous accidents and even violence in some stores as shoppers fought over specific sale items. Some people even camped out overnight to be the first in line to claim sale items.
And if the accidents and traffic jams weren’t enough to claim Black Friday, it also represented a day when many employees called in sick to take advantage of the deals.
Over the years, instead of retailers fighting the name that had a negative connotation, they started to embrace Black Friday from an accountant’s perspective. “In the black” is an accounting term that represents a profit while the term “in the red” symbolized a loss. For some merchants, the day represents the time of year when their stores make a profit and they use the day to thank their customers.
There probably won’t be any traffic jams or many accidents in Altus on Black Friday, so relax and enjoy shopping local. And if you haven’t found what you’re looking for, check out the Small Business Saturday specials at The Booterie, The Enchanted Door and The Whimz Frog. See page 3 for details.
